There are several engineering functions carried out by local authorities which are fundamental to ensure vital infrastructure to residents. While a council is responsible for local roads the maintenance of trunk roads remain the responsibility of BEAR Scotland. Each local authority may have a different structure or grouping of these services provided, the title of service provision and job titles may vary but here is a generalised overview of engineering responsibility:
- Bridges
- Roads
- Harbours
- Coast Protection
- Flood Management
- Roads and Winter Maintenance
- Traffic Engineering
These of types of Engineering are called Civil and Structural and require an engineering qualification. You can find out more from the Institute of Chartered Engineers. There are also some less qualified roles required to support the provision of these services which include Technical Assistant, Engineer Technician and CAD Technician.
Local authorities can offer many opportunities for career development in engineering, including continual professional development to achieve incorporation and chartership with the relevant professional bodies.
